SIS has right to ask for revision on Kartika whipping sentence: Shahrizat

PUTRAJAYA: Sisters in Islam has a right to file an application to revise a stay of execution in the Kartika Sari Dewi Shukarno whipping case at the Syariah High Court, said Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil.

She said she understood their position although Kartika had insisted on being caned for drinking beer.

”Kartika has spoken but at the same time, SIS as an advocacy group is probably looking at the bigger picture and they are in the position to do it.

“Let us see the outcome. Kartika has spoken very clearly but SIS also has a right. We are monitoring the situation very closely,” she said when met at the Hari Raya open house at Seri Perdana on Sunday.

On the open house, Shahrizat said it was a great idea to have the open house at Seri Perdana which “is like a heritage building and it belongs to the people.”

Kartika was fined RM5,000 and ordered to be whipped six times by the Syariah Court for drinking beer amidst public outcry.

However, Kartika was insistent about being caned and had asked people to leave her alone.

On the documented rape of Penan women, Shahrizat said Women’s Development Department director-general Datuk Dr Noorul Ainur Mohd Nur would be heading to Sarawak next week with the task force.

”The state government has requested for a meeting.

“We are closely monitoring the situation and will continue our action plan,” she added.

On the Nurin Alert system, also known as the Child Helpline alert system, Shahrizat said discussions would likely kick off after the Bagan Pinang by-election.

She said it was easier to get things going now that the Cabinet had approved the Child Policy and the Child Protection Policy.

”We are going to sit down and get things going. Ideally, the alert should be run by the police but we are calling all parties concerned. We will likely start after the Bagan Pinang by-election.”

It has been over two years since the idea was mooted after body of Nurin Jazlin Jazimin, eight was found in a gym bag.

Nurin, who was brutally assaulted sexually before being murdered, went missing after going alone to a pasar malam in Section 1, Wangsa Maju, at 8.30pm on Aug 20, 2007.

The alert system was modelled after the United States’ Amber alert. - Bernama
