21 motorist caught driving while ‘high on drugs’

KOTA BARU: Twenty-one drivers of heavy vehicles — 12 of them express bus drivers — were found to have been driving while under the influence of drugs during an operation against errant motorists from Sept 6 to 19.

Road Transport Department (JPJ) director-general Datuk Solah Mat Hassan said yesterday these drivers were examined at 30 bus terminals and heavy vehicles inspection centres nationwide during the operation, held in view of the Hari Raya festive period.

The inspection was conducted by JPJ officers with the co-operation of the National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK) and the police Anti-Narcotics Branch, he said.

“Those held after they were found to have tested positive for drugs were handed over to the police for further action,” he added.

Solah also said the JPJ had inspected the brakes and tyres of 2,808 express buses of 257 companies at workshops and terminals to ensure their roadworthiness.

“We have also issued 6,166 summonses to drivers, including 352 express bus drivers, for various traffic offences during the period,” he added.

Meanwhile, 12 deaths from road accidents were recorded on Monday, bringing the death toll to 164 since Ops Sikap started on Sept 13.

A Bukit Aman police statement yesterday said one death occurred on highways, five on federal roads, five on state roads and one on municipal roads.

Motorcyclists topped the number of deaths recorded so far, accounting for 82, followed by motorists at 57 and pedestrians (nine).

A total of 985 accidents were recorded and 7,078 summonses issued on Monday.

Federal roads had the most accidents at 342, followed by municipal roads (306), state roads (202), highways (83) and other roads (52).

Ops Sikap, aimed at reducing the number of road accidents during Hari Raya, ends on Sunday. — Bernama
