Indonesia gets 25 giant mooncakes for mid-autumn festival
By ANN TAN
GEORGE TOWN: Indonesians have placed a big order for mooncakes for the mid-autumn festival — really big mooncakes.
Twenty-five giant made-in-Penang mooncakes, weighing 8kg each, have been sent to customers in Medan and Jakarta.
Measuring 33cm in diameter, the custom-made mooncakes which cost RM328 each have 18 egg yolks and took an hour to bake, said Leong Yin Pastry Sdn Bhd managing director Leong Kok Fei.
“We received another six orders from local customers today. They are quite special and also big enough to share among guests,” he said.
However, Leong said this was not the biggest mooncake they had ever produced as his father Leong Seng Yoon, a mooncake specialist, had once made a 4m mooncake weighing a massive 2,000kg in their China factory for a Chinese customer.
Size does matter: Eight-year-old Yeoh Chun Jay comparing a normal-sized mooncake to the 8kg giant mooncake at a shop in Jalan Petani. “Apart from the 8kg giant mooncake, the moon with seven stars’ mooncakes weighing 185g and measuring 7.6cm in diameter with seven egg yolks are also popular with our customers. We have 10 new flavours every year to suit the market.
“This year, we have the green apple paste, yun yong (coffee with tea) paste, honey dew paste and lemon paste,” he said.
Leong said they offered custom-made mooncakes where customers are able to place their company’s logo on the skin and decide on the size and paste.
“This year, we are stressing on low fat and low sugar mooncakes but our Thailand and Indonesia customers prefer sweeter mooncakes,” he said.
