Police station at each low cost project
By MUGUNTAN VANAR
KOTA KINABALU: The National Housing Department will adopt a policy to allow one house in each low cost housing project to be converted into a police station.
Deputy Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Lajim Ukin said that such a move to provide police presence would provide a sense of security for the people in the housing area.
He said the department would be holding discussions to assess the feasibility of setting up a police station or beat base at low cost housing areas that are being sold at RM35,000 in peninsular Malaysia and RM42,000 a unit in Sabah.
''We hope to start the concept by next year or during the 10th Malaysia Plan period," he told reporters after presenting Hari Raya cakes to Deputy Sabah police commissioner Datuk Abdul razak Abdul Ghani at the Kepayan state police headquarters.
Lajim said the move to set up police stations or beat bases in housing areas arose after many complaints of petty crimes in such areas.
'Sometimes, irresponsible residents or visitors park their cars indiscriminately and this even leads to fights in the housing estates.
''Taking this in view, we decided to look at this concept as solution towards providing a safe and harmonious environment in such housing estates," he said at the function where he also thanked police for their tireless efforts to combat crime.
