Sepanggar set to welcome sub
KOTA KINABALU: The Sepanggar naval base is all set to receive Malaysia’s first submarine, the KD Tunku Abdul Rahman.
Royal Malaysian Navy Region II commander First Admiral Anuwi Hassan said they were fine-tuning the newly completed RM320mil base to accommodate the French-made Scorpene submarine, which is due to arrive here on Sept 17.
He said Yang di-Pertua Negri Tun Ahmadshah Abdullah would be present to receive the submarine that would be based in Sepanggar.
Admiral Anuwi said the placing of the submarine in Sepanggar was strategic as the state shared borders with many countries.
“This will allow us to carry out patrols properly as there are many overlapping claims,” said Admiral Anuwi after the blessing ceremony for the navy newest warships, the KD Sri Kota Kinabalu and the KD Sri Likas, at the base here yesterday.
On Thursday, the KD Tunku Abdul Rahman and its 32 crew members arrived at the KD Sultan Abdul Aziz jetty after completing a 6,000-nautical-mile journey from Toulon, France.
A second Scorpene submarine, the KD Tun Razak, is expected to arrive in Malaysia in March next year.
