Malaysian medical students help in Indonesian quake
KUALA LUMPUR: A group of 30 volunteers comprising Malaysian medical students from several universities in Indonesia have been deployed to provide assistance to victims of Thursday’s earthquake that hit West Java.
The voluntary group was initiated by the overseas Umno club in collaboration with the Malaysian Students Department in Indonesia and the Malaysian Embassy in Jakarta, said Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Ahmad Shabery Cheek.
Indonesian authorities had said that the 7.3 magnitude quake killed over 60 people, injured 400 others and destroyed 87,000 homes.
Ahmad Shabery added that the voluntary group was headed by Malaysian Students Department director in Indonesia Dr Junaidi Abu Bakar.
“They will provide food and clothing as well as meals for the breaking of fast.
“The volunteers will also look into other assistance which can be provided to the victims,” Ahmad Shabery, who is also overseas Umno club chairman, said in a statement. — Bernama
