Unlicensed traders expecting brisk business
GEORGE TOWN: Some 30 unlicensed traders at the Ramadan bazaar in Penang Road are gleefully looking forward to brisk business with Hari Raya less than two weeks away.
They were prevented from trading there last Saturday by Penang Municipal Council enforcement personnel, resulting in a fracas between them and state government representatives.
A check at the site showed an air of festivity with Hari Raya songs being played by traders on their radios, and shoppers looking for items at bargain prices.
Siti Zabidah Latiff, 48, who has been trading at the site for the past 19 years, said she was happy that they were allowed to trade at the site.
“When the authorities suddenly made such a big fuss over the issue, we were fuming mad,” she said.
“But now we thank the state government and the other parties involved who helped solve the issue. Now we can trade here peacefully,” she said.
Aminul Haque Nazir Ahmad said he had traded at the site for the past 26 years, and was glad that authorities made the right decision in allowing them to trade there.
“The state government told us that they will allow us to trade here until they find a suitable location for us.”
