MP resigns as party deputy chairman after consultation with leaders
PETALING JAYA: Indera Mahkota MP Azan Ismail’s resignation as Pahang PKR deputy chairman was made after consultations with the party leadership.
Speculation had been rife about a possible crisis in the party since Azan announced his resignation on Monday, but the 44-year-old has moved to dispel rumours by saying he is a loyal supporter of the party and has no intention to tarnish its image.
“What happened was a normal process. The decision to resign was discussed with the party leadership.
“It was a rational thing to do because there were three deputy chairmen in Pahang,” he told reporters yesterday.
The other two deputy chairmen are Jerantut division chief Mohd Nor Jaafar and Ram Ponu-samy.
Azan also resigned as the Pahang PKR membership bureau chairman, but remains Indera Mahkota MP and the party’s division chief.
He was reported as saying that he decided to resign as he was disappointed with the way PKR was being managed.
He warned members against running the party like a business entity or making it look like they owned it.
“This is not a ‘private limited’ business entity nor PKR is a personal property,” he said.
In the last general election, Azan defeated Barisan Nasional candidate Salamon Ali Rizal Abdul Rahman by a 1,027-vote majority for the Indera Mahkota seat.
