KUALA LUMPUR: A group of people, including politicians and several NGO members, have gathered in front the Bukit Aman police station Saturday morning demanding information on the whereabouts of K. Selvachandran.

Selvachandran was a key witness in the inquest of toddy shop assistant R. Gunasegaran, who died in police custody two years ago. The Coroner’s Court delivered an open verdict on Monday on his death.

The group of 70 people, including MPs Charles Santiago (Klang), R. Sivarasa (Subang), lawyers Latheefa Koya and N.Surendran, representatives from MIC, several NGOs as well as Selvachandran’s wife and relatives had gathered as early as 10am under the watchful eyes of the police.

The group shouted slogans and held placards demanding justice, hitting out at police brutality and demanding for Selvachandran’s safe return.

“Only after we are satisfied that Selvachandran is safe and well will we leave,” Latheefa said, adding that they would also hand a memorandum to the police to investigate the matter thoroughly.

After an hour and half later, a police spokesperson said that the narcotics department took action against Selvachandran under the Dangerous Drugs Act (Special Preventive Measures).

The protesters, then handed over a memorandum demanding Selvachandran’s immediate release as well as a public apology from the police.

They then dispersed.

It is believed that a group of unidentified men barged into Selvachandran’s home on Monday night, hours after the open verdict was announced.

The men had allegedly handcuffed Selvachandran in front of his wife and kids before asking her to give him a kiss.

They then took Selvachandran outside before beating him up.

When questioned by Selvachandran’s wife, the men hurled verbal abuses at her before briefly flashing a card claiming they were policemen.

Selvachandran has been reported missing since.
