Principal abuses kindie students

I HAVE been teaching at a kindergarten in Shah Alam for almost 13 years, and would like to alert the authorities to the abuse that is taking place there.

The principal of the kindergarten, who is in her 50s, would periodically come to my class to check on the progress of the children by asking them to read in front of her.

The children are so terrified of her that most of them cannot read properly in front of her. She would then lose her temper and start to abuse them needlessly.

On March 4, a boy was asked to read in front of her and as usual, the boy couldn’t read as expected. In a fit, the principal threw the boy’s book onto the floor and subsequently asked a girl to read. The girl was so terrified she started crying and could not read.

The principal then got so agitated that she pushed away the girl’s desk and shoved her against the door.

Being her class teacher, I had to stop the violent abuse. The pincipal then got worked up and started venting her anger on me by abusing me verbally in front of the children. She even asked me to leave my job immediately.

I wish to ask the Education Ministry how we can stop such abuse in kindergartens? Parents send their children to the kindergarten to learn to read and write and not to be abused.

If children are frequently treated like this at a tender age, they would definitely develop a phobia for school in the future. This will devastate their future and development indefinitely.

I hope the Ministry will develop a mechanism to check out such abuse and prevent them altogether. These young children need to be protected and cared for.

A TEACHER,
Shah Alam.
