No logic in delivering MyKad
SOMETIMES I am just amazed by the thinking processes and logic adopted by some government departments.
I am referring to the letter written by the Public Relations Officer of The National Registration Department (NRD) which stated that home delivery of uncollected MyKad is not a waste of funds (The Star, March 5).
According to the NRD, it would also be a waste of money if the department were to dispose of the uncollected cards, and therefore it should be avoided.
The MyKad is a legal document that is required at some point by all residents. I believe eventually most of these cards will be collected by the applicants concerned.
It is only a small piece of plastic and should not cost too much to store.
If indeed there are extra costs involved, I believe the NRD should have every right to impose a penalty for late collection to recover the extra costs incurred.
Home delivery of the MyKad imposes other risks in addition to delivery costs. These cards may fall into the wrong hands which can result in unauthorised use.
I appreciate the fact that these uncollected cards have been processed, approved and issued by the NRD. In other words, they have already “consumed” the resources of the department and to dispose of them would constitute a waste of resources.
But to further incur delivery costs without knowing the exact positive outcome is to throw more good money after bad. I hope someone is not eyeing the delivery job already!
