Labourer in jail faces two drug charges


JOHOR BARU: A labourer, who is already serving time for gang robbery, claimed trial at the magistrate’s court here to two charges of drug possession.

K. Muthumaran, 39, was allegedly found with 6.73g of syabu and 2.79g of heroin while in a solitary confinement cell at the Air Molek prison.

He was charged with two counts of drug possession under Section 12(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries a maximum jail term of up to five years or a maximum fine of RM100,000.

Magistrate Hafizah Johor Ariff Johor set bail at RM10,000 and April 9 for next mention.

Muthumaran could not post bail and is being detained at the prison.

In the same court yesterday, a log-cutter pleaded guilty to a charge of criminal intimidation.

Mohd Haniffah Ibrahim, 42, was accused of threatening to kill a policeman who was conducting a routine check at an oil palm plantation in Taman University, at 5.30pm on March 6.

He told the police constable: “If I find you in Sri Skudai, I will make sure you die, I will murder you” (“kalau aku jumpa kau kat Sri Skudai, aku akan pastikan kau mati, aku bunuh”).

Mohd Haniffah was charged under Section 506 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum of seven years’ jail or fine upon conviction.

Hafizah Johor fined Mohd Haniffah RM1,700 in default of five months’ jail.

Mohd Haniffah settled the fine.
