PM to leave it to the authorities to investigate Zahrain's claims

KUALA LIPIS: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak will leave it to the authorities to investigate alleged claims that Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had said he had the blessings of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to execute his Sept 16 takeover plan in 2008.

Najib said the authorities would decide whether the claims by the Opposition Leader had infringed any laws.

"The authorities know what to do. It's up to them," he told reporters after opening the Rural and Regional Development Ministry's 50th anniversary at Dataran Lipis near here on Saturday.

Two days ago, independent Bayan Baru member of parliament Datuk Seri Zahrain Mohamed Hashim had said in the Dewan Rakyat that Anwar had allegedly convinced Opposition MPs that the Yang di-Pertuan Agong was waiting to confirm the number of Barisan Nasional MPs joining the Opposition.

The Prime Minister said he believed the people were now aware of the lies being spread by the opposition and their huge ambition to rule the country.

On a statement by PAS spiritual leader Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat who described Zahrain's revelation as innapropriate, Najib said:"It seems that only one person is saying so."

Earlier in his speech, Najib said he hoped that people in rural areas would not be easily hoodwinked by people claiming to be fighting for them.

"Lies are being spread around. To them, there is justification to everything, including name-dropping, claiming that the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and the military were on their side, as long as they can go to Putrajaya.

"Our mission is different, that is to fight for the people. The Barisan Nasional will continue to fight for the people," he said.

Najib said the people should judge for themselves the Barisan's commitment in developing the country either in towns or in rural areas. - BERNAMA
