Anuar Zain gets his royalties

KUALA LUMPUR: The High Court has ordered a recording company to pay award-winning singer Anuar Zain royalties from the sale of his album.
Judicial Commissioner Dr Prasad Sandhoshan Abraham made the ruling after hearing arguments from both parties. Howevere, he did not award damages.
“You go to the registrar to assess the damages and royalties. You have to produce your own evidence,” he said.
Dr Prasad also granted costs and interest to be paid to the singer.
Anuar had counter sued the recording company – Synchrosound Records Label Music Sdn Bhd – for the royalty payment of his album sales four years ago.
The company had earlier filed a suit against the singer for allegedly breaching a contract but it was dismissed by the High Court in 2007.
The court was informed by the singer’s lawyer Aizul Rohan Anuar that the company was now defunct, dormant and was no longer employing any staff.
In his suit, Anuar had asked for the company to provide details or statements on the sale of his album. He also asked for royalty payment, costs and interest.
Speaking to reporters outside the court, Anuar said he was relieved the case is over.
“I advise new artists to be cautious and engage a lawyer when signing contracts,” said the singer who was famous for songs such as ‘Bila Resah’, ‘Keabadian Cinta’ and ‘Lelaki Ini’.
Anuar has a string of awards to his name, including best male vocalist and most popular male singer.
