Rais: Higher farm yield with wireless technology
PUTRAJAYA: Agricultural producers can enjoy higher yields through the use of a wireless sensor network (WSN).
Information, Communications and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim said through locally-developed WSN, medium and large-scale farms could monitor fertigation (the application of fertilisers, soil amendments, or other water soluble products through an irrigation system), humidity and soil conditions.
He said the WSN service would also be useful to monitor cattle movement and determine the quality of a water source.
“Through WSN, the traditional way of farming can become more scientific.
“This will enable farmers to eliminate uncertainty in agricultural planning, hence producing better yields,” he said at the launch of the National Centre of Excellence for Sensor Technology yesterday.
Rais’s speech was read by his deputy Datuk Joseph Salang.
The centre, located in Universiti Putra Malaysia, conducts research and development and promotes the use of WSN technology.
