Suspected car smugglers arrested

IPOH: Police have arrested several suspects believed to be members of a syndicate smuggling millions of ringgit worth of stolen vehicles overseas.

Deputy Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Ismail Omar said, however, they were still getting evidence to charge the suspects.

“Forty-six stolen vehicles have been located in various Asian countries while 36 were traced in other countries within the past six months.

“We are looking to link the suspects to the car thefts and smuggling activities because they have learnt to destroy the evidence,” he told reporters after opening a police conference here yesterday.

“We are trying to identify their modus operandi and will take the necessary action to cripple the syndicate,” he said, adding that they would contact police from neighbouring countries for more information.

Ismail said police had also identified the syndicate’s top bosses and those working in the lower rung. He said they were also investigating the possibility that government personnel could have been involved.

On another matter, Ismail said police would be trained with information technology skills to help them operate advanced communication gadgets in combating cyber crime.

“We want to train our policemen to be more IT savvy and equip them with the necessary gadgets to work efficiently,” he said.

He added that the police would also upgrade their communication system by 2018.
