Ismail Sabri brushes off protest threats
KUALA LUMPUR: The Government is unperturbed by the threats of certain quarters to protest against recent subsidy cuts for sugar, petrol and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), as it has minimal effect on the people.
“The Opposition will protest anything we do. We made sure the subsidy cuts would not burden the people,” said Domestic Trade, Co-opeartives and Consumerism Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob at the sidelines of the 15th Malaysian Law Conference
“For example, the price of sugar has increased by 25 sen per kilo. On average, a household only uses 2kg per month, which is an increase of about 50 sen per month,” he said.
Speaking at the session “Competition Act 2010: What it means to Malaysian Businesses” later, Ismail Sabri said the industry had been receptive towards the law that comes into effect in January 2012.
Panellist and ministry undersecretary Shila Dorai Raj said an interim Competition Commission would begin next week to aggressively publicise the Act.
