Encouraging feedback for GTP from the rakyat

KUALA LUMPUR: Encouraging, commendable and successful: These are words used by the rakyat to describe the Government Transformation Programme (GTP).

Malaysian Crime Prevention Foundation vice-president Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye praised the police for successfully reducing street crime rate by 35% and the crime rate index by 15%.

Peninsular Malaysia Orang Asli Association president Majid Sohot was happy with the progress in rural basic infrastructure for orang asli settlements.

“Many settlements have received fitted pipes and treated water and electricity this is a good sign that more interior settlements will get the same facilities soon,” he said in the 2010 Annual Report of the GTP.

Transparency International Malaysian Chapter president Datuk Paul Low said the challenge of the National Key Result Areas (NKRA) was to combat “grand corruption”, as well as reforming political processes and political financing.

On education, National Union of the Teaching Profession secretary-general Loke Yim Peng said the Literacy and Numeracy programme was progressing well.

“It has received good feedback from teachers and has helped children develop the three basic skills of reading, writing and counting,” she said.

The GTP was also commended by the International Performance Review (IPR) Committee which comprised independent experts such as McKinsey UK partner Sir Michael Barber, Fairfax Group chief executive officer Michael Hershman and Australian public service commissioner Stephen Sedgewick.

The committee's review included four aspects of the NKRA: improving student performance, low-income households, fighting corruption and reducing crime.

The consensus reached by the IPR committee was that many of the “ambitious, first year targets” had been met and set a positive tone in the coming years.
