King: Aim for Vision 2020

KUALA LUMPUR: The Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin believes that the country's economy will continue to grow if efforts are intensified to achieve the vision of turning Malaysia into a developed, high-income nation by 2020.

The King said the country's position was encouraging from the economic aspect, and investments have continued to rise while inflation was at a controlled level.

“The country's strength depends much on the administrative institutions and strong implementation of programmes in creating a developed and respected nation,” said Tuanku Mizan at the investiture in conjunction with His Majesty's birthday at Istana Negara yesterday.

The King expressed his happiness on the Government's efforts and initiatives to improve these institutions towards achieving Vision 2020.

Tuanku Mizan said Malaysia was not spared the tremendous global economic pressure, including the hike in oil prices.

“Nevertheless, I am grateful that the Government is still able to cushion the effects of the fuel price increase in the interest of the people's well-being.

“I am happy that the Government has been able to maintain the price of RON95, diesel and liquefied petroleum gas.

“I also wish to remind traders to cooperate by not taking advantage of the situation by raising the prices of goods as it would have adverse impact on the people.”

Tuanku Mizan said that although it was not easy for people of different races and religions to live together peacefully and share everything, Malaysians have shown that diversity was not a problem or a hindrance.

“However, I am sad that there are still quarters who try to disrupt the peace by raising sensitive issues to serve their personal agenda.”

Tuanku Mizan also conveyed his condolences to the families of victims who died in the landslide that hit Rumah Anak Yatim Hidayah in Hulu Langat on May 21.

He hoped that the tragedy would be a lesson for all to be more sensitive towards the environment.

Tuanku Mizan also gave his appreciation and support to the Government's commitment under the leadership of Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak to enhance the people's integrity and in combating corruption. - Bernama
