RM2,500 for fresh grad is nothing

WE fresh graduates have financial burdens, too, and while it may be true that some do ask for too high a salary, employers should also understand that we are faced with many challenges and commitments as well (“The problem with fresh grads” – Sunday Star, July 17).

Last month, when I went for a job interview, I did not dare demand too high a salary. However, when I calculated my expenses, I really think that RM2,500 for a fresh graduate is nothing, considering the amount of financial burdens we have to carry.

Let me explain. I have a study loan with PTPTN which amounts to RM16,500, which I will have to repay once I get a job.

Added to that, I would have to pay for my room rent as well as car instalment. It is inconvenient and also unsafe for me to take public transport as I need to travel from my workplace to my college in Kuala Lumpur, and classes end at night.

On top of that, there’re the bills – petrol, food, and of course, my college fees, books, notes and other miscellanous things.

Not all of us care only about social life or buying branded goods. I only want to be financially independent of my parents by the time I am 25 and if I am not earning enough, my parents will still have to chip in for my monthly expenses. So, please look at this issue from both sides.

UMS FRESHIE,

Bukit Mertajam.
