PETALING JAYA: The year 2012 looks set to be busy for the judiciary with many big cases lined up in the legal calendar.

Among the prominent figures set make an appearance in court this year are Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, former transport ministers Tun Dr Ling Liong Sik and Tan Sri Chan Kong Choy, and former Selangor mentri besar Dr Mohd Khir Toyo.

First on the list will be a verdict by the Kuala Lumpur High Court on Jan 9, on Anwar's second sodomy trial.

On Aug 7, 2008, Anwar, 64, had pleaded not guilty to sodomising Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan, his former personal aide, at the Desa Damansara Condominium Bukit Damansara in Kuala Lumpur on June 26, 2008.

Another public interest matter to be heard in court this year revolves around the Port Klang Free Zone (PKFZ) scandal.

On Jan 27, Dr Ling will know whether he will be called to enter his defence over charges related to the PKFZ issue.

If he is not called to enter his defence, the court will have to acquit him.

His successor as transport minister, Chan, will also be in court over the same scandal when his trial begins on April 2.

On Feb 28 last year, Chan claimed trial to three counts of deceiving former prime minister Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi into approving Kuala Dimensi Sdn Bhd as the turnkey developer for the port projects.

As for Dr Mohd Khir, the Court of Appeal will hear his appeal against his one-year jail sentence for knowingly purchasing two pieces of land and a bungalow in Shah Alam from Ditamas Sdn Bhd director Shamsuddin Hayroni at RM3.5mil, which was a much lower price than the RM6.5mil Ditamas paid for in 2004.

The Shah Alam High Court convicted him nine days ago and ordered his land and bungalow to be forfeited.

However, his sentence has been stayed pending appeal and the appellate court has yet to fix a date for the hearing.
