More Tamil studies depts at varsities


HUMAN Resources Minister and MIC deputy president Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam said the Higher Education Ministry has agreed at policy level to set up more Tamil studies departments in universities, Makkal Osai reported.

He said Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris had such a department and one more was in the pipeline for Universiti Utara Malaysia.

> MIC central working committee member K.P. Samy said Indians who had helped Pakatan Rakyat take control of four states in the last general election had not benefited in any way, Tamil Nesan reported.

He said there were about 200 directors in state-linked government agencies in the four states but not a single Indian had been appointed to the post.

He said Selangor Library deputy director S. Kamalam, who had served for than 30 years, was not promoted as a director and an outsider from a different race had been appointed.

He said the proposal by M. Manogaran in the Selangor state assembly that Tamil schools and temples in the state be given land was not supported by elected Indian leaders.

> Malaysia Nanban reported that the highly-publicised relationship and wedding of South Indian actress Nayantara and director-actor-choreographer Prabhu Deva has been called off.

A source revealed that Nayantara had decided to return to films. It was reported that she had now agreed to play the heroine opposite Nagarjuna in a Telugu movie to be directed by Dasarath. Shooting for the movie is expected to start in May.
