Malaysia, Singapore looking at underground road link (Update)

BY MAZWIN NIK ANIS

PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia and Singapore are looking at the possibility of an underground road link between the two countries.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said a study, which has been commissioned on the proposed rapid transit system between Johor Baru and Singapore, will be expanded to include this.

Najib and his Singapore counterpart Lee Hsien Loong, who met at the Malaysia-Singapore Leaders' Retreat here Thursday, also agreed to explore other areas, including the alignment of radio frequency spectrum plans for digital broadcast and mobile broadband services.

This is to meet the growing demand for digital television and mobile broadband, improve regional mobile roaming services and provide competitive mobile broadband services.

A new work group on industrial cooperation to promote Iskandar Malaysia and Singapore will also be formed.

The other areas discussed by the two leaders included cooperation in aviation and airport services between Senai International Airport in Johor and Changi in Singapore.

They also talked about cooperation in higher education, technical and vocational education, and teaching and learning of the English language.

Earlier, Najib welcomed Lee at Level One of the Prime Minister's Office here and the two leaders then proceeded to Level Five for the Retreat.

The first of such retreats was held in May 2007 in Langkawi and the second in Singapore in May 2010.
