All-in-one checks at roadblocks

There will be comprehensive checks for motorists soon via an integrated approach on enforcement. - Filepic KUALA LUMPUR: Roadblocks in the future will be comprehensive ones where a motorist could be checked not just for speeding but also licence plates, road tax and a host of other offences.
This is made possible through an integrated approach in enforcement operations by the various road and traffic enforcement agencies in the country like police, Road Transport Department (JPJ) and the Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD).
These agencies, along with Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (Miros) and the Road Safety Department, as well as Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) and Putrajaya Corporation (PPJ) have drawn up a standard operating procedure (SOP) to help streamline the enforcement process on traffic offences.
Inspector-General of police Tan Sri Ismail Omar said this move would eliminate overlapping enforcement work.
“As there are so many agencies, things can get confusing in terms of which agency does what.
“That is why this SOP was created to be an operational guideline for all the agencies whether it be a joint operation or otherwise,” he said after signing the SOP in Bukit Aman yesterday.
Ismail explained that a newly-formed Road Transport Enforcement Operations Committee, which is made up of representatives from the various agencies involved, will meet every three months to discuss and improve the SOP.
“Hopefully, this will make us all more efficient in our operational processes and help create a better public perception of us,” he said.
He added that the SOP would also involve information sharing between the agencies, including blacklisting.
“However, it is not yet implemented but something we are working towards,” Ismail said.
He added that with DBKL on board, the committee would try to get the participation of all local councils.
Ismail said that a test run joint operation of the new SOP would be held in a month's time to show how the new system works.
