Stolen bike parts for sale – on FB

JOHOR BARU: Not only did four men steal motorcycles but they made a huge profit of RM63,000 by selling the parts on Facebook.

They used the social networking service to sell the stolen parts before sending the orders using a courier service to customers nationwide.

Johor police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Mohd Mokhtar Mohd Shariff said the group's operations came to an end when they were arrested on Oct 3 at about 6pm in Taman Murni, Kluang.

He described the group as “smart” but used their brains and knowledge wrongly.

“There is now a trend, especially among young entrepreneurs, to sell and market products on the Internet but unfortunately they sold stolen parts instead,” he said at a press conference yesterday

DCP Mohd Mokhtar added that the four suspects, aged between 22 and 25, were believed to be involved in more than nine cases of motorcycle theft in Kluang.

“When the police raided their premises, one of the suspects was dismantling a motorcycle.

“We also recovered seven motorcycle frames, five motorcycle seats, five exhaust pipes, two engines, four registration plates and two autopasses.

“Initial checks revealed that one of the suspects had a previous criminal record,” he said.

He said one of the suspects was a mechanic while the others were unemployed, adding that most of the syndicate's customers were school students and university undergraduates.

He urged the buyers to return the stolen items immediately.

“The police have courier receipts from previous sales and have found records of orders from as far as Perlis,” he said.

In an unrelated case, police have busted a break-in syndicate believed to be involved in 10 cases in Seri Alam here with the arrest of three suspects, including two women, between the ages of 18 and 42 on Oct 6 at about 7.20pm.

“Several stolen items were found, including a car that was reported stolen in Taman Pelangi, 11 handphones, four television sets, three laptops, two DVD players, two LCD monitors and a CPU unit,” DCP Mohd Mokhtar said.
