Nazri: Flood victims to sign anti-fraud forms to receive aid
BY FARIK ZOLKEPLI
KUALA TERENGGANU: For the first time, flood aid recipients will have to register with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Agency (MACC) to prevent cases of fraud.
Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz said the move could stop people who do not deserve to receive the aid.
"This is the first time we are resorting to having recipients fill up a form.
"The registration for aid recipients will be handled by the respective district offices," Nazri, who is Central Disaster Management committee chairman, told pressmen after chairing the Terengganu Disaster Management committee meeting here.
Nazri hoped the new mechanism would prevent any wastage of funds as only the most deserving would receive aid.
He explained that flood victims, who have been transferred to relief centres, would be registered for the aid.
"Thus, it would be harder for us to distribute aid to those who refuse to be transferred to relief centres.
"Usually the aid will be given within three days after registration," he said.
On the possibility of the general election being held during the flood season, Nazri said it was not wise to speculate.
"However, the government is prepared to face the floods regardless of whether the elections are held," he said.
Nazri reminded the people to rely on reliable flood information by official radio and television stations and agencies.
"We expect the flood to occur (in Terengganu) between Nov 14 and 19 as well as Nov 27 and 30.
"In December, we expect it between Dec 12 and 19 and Dec 25 and 31," he said.
