Armed Forces' English Channel swimmers get cash, promotion

KUALA LUMPUR: The seven Armed Forces personnel who swam across the English Channel last month will receive cash rewards and a promotion to the next rank.

Seven other reserve swimmers, also from the armed forces, and a coach who had participated in the swim under the 1Malaysia English Channel Unity Swim Expedition would also be rewarded.

The rewards were announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak at an appreciation lunch for the expedition members at the Banquet Hall of Parliament House here.

Present was Defence Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

The cash rewards are from the 1Malaysia Development Berhad foundation.

Solo swimmer Lance Corporal Estino Taniyu will receive RM20,000, while the six other relay swimmers, RM10,000 each. They are Lance Corporal Mohd Roslan Mohd Zawawi, Captain Mohd Khairul Faizal Mazli, Sergeant (Air) Mohd Salleh Mahmor, Captain Buranurdin Sali, Corporal (Air) Shahrizal Omar and Trooper Mohd Zulfadhli Mahamad.

The reserve swimmers and coach will each get RM5,000.

Najib said their successful swim from Dover in Britain to Calais in France was a recognition for the country and the armed forces.

He said he was impressed with the feat of the swimmers who had to overcome various challenges, including the weather, water temperature and sea condition.

"I think those who do not have the will, resilience and extraordinary competitiveness cannot make it.

"They need extraordinary physical, spiritual and mental strength, and their success is appreciated by the Malaysian government and people," he said.

He said he hoped that their success would inspire other Malaysians.

Estino told reporters he had not looked forward to any reward, but said he would spend the money on his wedding which he had postponed to join the expedition. - Bernama
