MUKAH: The Welfare, Women and Family Development Ministry is trying to help 7,000 poor families statewide this year through its 1Azam programme.

The families have to register with e-Kasih first, especially those who have not done so, to make it easier for the ministry and relevant agencies to disburse the aid.

Currently, registration is done manually through the District Office.

Minister Datuk Fatimah Abdullah said next year another group of poor families would be given similar assistance, adding that those entrusted to handle e-Kasih registration of the poor should try to avoid duplication.

“At the same time, try to avoid being biased too,” she said at the opening of the Oya Saturday Market Carnival cum Seventh Anniversary celebration in Oya over the weekend.

She said before giving out any assistance, the agency concerned should first verify the status of the applicants.

Fatimah said for example, if the assistance was from the Malaysian Fisheries Development Board (LKIM), the agency concerned should verify whether the applicant and his or her family members can make use of the aid given.

She said the agency should also verify if the applicant had already received assistance from other agency like Sarawak Economic Development Corporation or Agriculture Department.

Fatimah said this was necessary to avoid the same applicant receiving more than one form of assistance thus denying other deserving applicants.

“This is because my ministry has been given a new role, that is to monitor the registration of e-Kasih,” she explained.

According to Fatimah, 16 focus groups were involved in poverty eradication programme under 1Azam, among them were Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (Fama), Federal Land Consolidation and Rehabilitation Authority (Felcra), GiatMara and Amanah Ikhtiar Malaysia (Aim).

She said there were 11,400 1Azam aid recipients last year compared to 7,000 this year, while the total number of poor people registered under e-Kasih as at Sept 13 was 77,998.
