Witnesses to get copy of MACC interview

KUALA LUMPUR: Any witness whose interview is taped by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) can get to keep a copy in a move to further improve the graft-buster's transparency.

MACC deputy director-general (management and professionalism) Datuk Zakaria Jaaffar said three copies would be made.

“One will be kept by the witness, another by the investigating officer and the other will be produced as evidence in court,” he said. “The move will prevent any editing or manipulating of the footage.”

The Video camera Interview Room (VIR), a facility that was started in Hong Kong, was introduced by the MACC early this year to improve transparency of its investigating procedures. It is also to prevent “mysterious deaths” of witnesses.

“The VIR is a room with a table and a wide mirror that allows viewing from the outside,” said Zakaria.

“It also shows that the MACC is transparent in carrying out the interrogation and interview process,” he said at the close of an anti-corruption strategic management course for senior executives here yesterday.

So far, the VIR facility is only available at the MACC headquarters in Putrajaya, Perak and Malacca. There is also one at the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Academy in Jalan Duta here. - Bernama
