KUALA LUMPUR: The legendary Princess Wen Cheng made a triumphant “homecoming” to Istana Budaya.

Princess Wen Cheng: The Musical, which made its debut here in 2008, showcases a vivid display of song and dance, and its second restaging here drew the applause of the full-house crowd at the premiere last night.

The show, produced by Asia Musical Productions, has travelled to Taipei and Beijing and Xi'an in China, drawing acclaim from both critics and audiences alike.

The musical follows the tale of the titular Tang Dynasty princess who left home some 1,300 years ago to marry the Tibetan king Songtsen Gampo as part of a peace treaty.

Thrust into the unknown, the princess faced a myriad of difficulties along the journey but went on to win the hearts of Tibetans with her kindness and compassion.

She became their most beloved queen and is credited for introducing Buddhism and Tang culture into the region.

The Chinese musical, produced by Asia Musical Productions, has been described as a marriage of Eastern history and Broadway pizzazz.

Its colourful premiere last night drew a full house at nearly 1,200 people.

The event was attended by Star Publications (M) Bhd chairman Tan Sri Dr Fong Chan Onn, and executive deputy chairman Datuk Vincent Lee and executive director/group chief editor Datuk Seri Wong Chun Wai.

Princess Wen Cheng: The Musical will be staged at Istana Budaya from Oct 13 to 28.

It is presented by Magnum, with co-sponsors MCA, Berjaya, Cosway, Sime Darby Foundation and Sports Toto. The Star and two of its radio stations, 988 and Capital FM, are the official media.

Tickets to the musical are priced between RM53 and RM333 for the matinee and RM63 and RM383 for evening shows. For more information, call 03-9222 8811/018-266 6900 or log on to ticketcharge.com.my/asiamusicalproductions.com.
