PAC to call up govt departments with glaring weaknesses

By FLORENCE A.SAMY and MARTIN CARVALHO

KUALA LUMPUR: The Public Accounts Committee will meet next week to decide which of the 30 Federal departments with weaknesses that will be called for further investigation.

"We will meet next week and study and decide which departments we will call this year and next year,” said PAC chairman Datuk Seri Azmi Khalid

"There are about 30 Federal departments but it is not necessary to call all. The list is with us. We will definitely look at those with glaring weaknesses,” he told a press conference Monday after a briefing by Auditor-General Tan Sri Ambrin Buang.

Azmi pointed out that the weakness, namely in procurement of equipments, maintenance of government buildings and handling of contracts were almost the same every year despite the audits being carried out in a random manner.

"Each year it happens although there has been some improvements.

"We have been informed that the Government has started an initiative to improve this.

"We have also asked feedback from the Government on what action has been taken against administrative officers who have conflict of interest," said Azmi who agreed that specific initiatives were required.

He also noted that more government departments had received a 'four star' rating compared to 2010 especially the state departments, which increased from 34 to 66 last year.
