Woman hurt in ceiling collapse at Penang International Airport

GEORGE TOWN: Several pieces of ceiling in front of the ticket counter at Penang International Airport (PIA) collapsed causing hurt to an employee Monday morning.

PIA senior manager Mohd Arif Jaafar said the 26-year-old woman manning the customer service counter was rushed to hospital after the ceiling suddenly fell on her head at 8.30am.

"She is in stable condition after being treated as an outpatient at Penang Hospital," he said when contacted here on Monday.

The incident did not affect passenger flights and the management had carried out repair work on the affected area.

In a statement later in the day, Malaysia Airport, which runs the airport, apologised for the incident and said that water seepage following an exceptionally heavy downpour affected the ceiling.

“This was caused by the old gutters that could not contain the water flow from the new roof.

“Malaysia Airports has informed the contractors to expedite the replacement of the old gutters to avoid similar occurrence in the future.

“We seek the public's understanding on the matter as PIA is undergoing a major expansion and upgrading whilst sustaining the airport operations at the same time,” the statement said.
