Man arrested for trying to smuggle out 23 pangolins

BUKIT KAYU HITAM: A man was arrested for trying to smuggle out 23 pangolins to a neighbouring country at 10am Tuesday at Border Gate C here.

Deputy Commander of Northern Brigade General Operations Force (GOF), ACP Khaw Kok Chin said the man was arrested after officers inspected his Perodua Kancil and found the pangolins in several sacks.

"The sacks containing pangolins weighing 70 kg were placed in the spare tyre compartment to avoid detection. The pangolins can fetch RM300 per kg," he told reporters here Tuesday.

Following the man's arrest, another man believed to be his friend talked to the officers and tried to settle the matter.

"The man tried to bribe our officers by offering RM1,000 to release his friend. We have arrested the man for bribery." Khaw said the pangolins would be sent to the Wildlife Department for further action. - Bernama
