More to enjoy KADS1M

MALAYSIANS studying overseas and part-time university students will soon be able to enjoy the benefit of the 1Malaysia Student Discount Card (KADS1M).

Deputy Domestic Trade, Cooperative and Consumerism Minister Datuk Rohani Abdul Karim said at the moment, only full-time students in local private and public universities enjoy the benefit of the discount card.

Through the card, students can get discounts up to 60% at various retail outlets and shops around the country.

“After receiving positive feedback, the ministry is considering extending this card to include students studying overseas as well as part-time students.

“This is the Government’s way of helping students reduce their daily cost of living,” she said when replying to Datuk Mohamad Aziz (BN-Sri Gading) in the Dewan Rakyat.

Rohani said the introduction of the card did not cost the Government anything.

“The initiative is made available through the corporate social responsibility of Bank Rakyat, which is coordinating with the relevant companies in providing the discounts.

“They are also responsible in distributing the cards,” she said, adding that KADS1M was the result of discussions between the National Student Consultative Council and the Higher Education Ministry last year.

She said as of this month, 927,397 cards had been distributed and students who had applied could collect their cards by the end of the month.

Meanwhile, Deputy Education Minister Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong said no school was left out in the distribution of Government’s allocations, including vernacular and religious schools.

However, he clarified that the management and funding of Chinese independent high schools did not fall under the power of the Education Ministry.
