KUCHING: The Enforcement Agency Integrity Commission (EAIC) has revealed that the police topped the list as the agency with the most number of public complaints against it nationwide.

The commission’s chairman Datuk Heliliah Mohd Yusoff said complaints of police misconduct and wrongdoing accounted for 194 out of the total 283 filed by the public since the formation of the EAIC in April last year.

She noted that most of the complaints were about dissatisfaction over the manner the police conducted investigations, including the time taken to complete the probe and decide the next course of action.

Far behind the police was the Immigration Department with 15 complaints, followed by the Land Transport Department and Enforcement Division of Housing and Local Government Ministry, which recorded eight complaints each.

The rest of the complaints were directed at agencies that included Customs (five), National Registration Department (three) and Health Ministry (two).

Heliliah said of the total number of complaints, nine were directed at the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) for bribery while 18 were addressed to the disciplinary department within the police force.

She pointed out that Kuala Lumpur recorded the highest number of complaints with 79, followed by Selangor with 59, Penang (23), Johor (16) while Perak and Negri Sembilan recorded 15 each.

“Sarawak so far recorded only six complaints, mostly against the police,” she told a press conference after a dialogue with the various enforcement agencies here yesterday.
