Woman who cheated senior citizen caught on CCTV

MUKAH: A woman who pretended to be a Good Samaritan by offering to help a senior citizen fill a Bantuan Rakyat 1Malaysia (BR1M) form turned out to be a thief.

She stole the victim’s handbag and gold jewellery.

The senior citizen from Kampung Tellian Daya here was in town with her husband. Somehow they got separated while doing some shopping.

Diw Jabar, 70, in her police report, said at around 10.15am last Wednesday, she was at a shopping centre in the old part of town. There a woman approached her and introduced herself as Maria.

Two men and a boy who accompanied her were inside a car.

The woman invited her to go to Menara Pehin Setia Raja to get a BR1M form.

Initially Diw declined to follow the group, but eventually agreed after Maria told her that she worked at the office complex and often helped senior citizens fill their BR1M forms.

But instead of going to Menara Pehin Setia Raja, the group brought Diw to Kingwood Hotel’s carpark.

On the way she was asked to place her necklace, two gold rings, a pair of earrings, a bracelet and RM150 inside her handbag.

After that Maria asked her to enter the hotel leaving her handbag inside the car.

She invited Maria to accompany her but Maria declined, saying that her colleague was already waiting for her (Diw) in the hotel’s office.

After waiting for about half an hour, Diw became suspicious and asked for clarification from a hotel worker. She was told that there was no BR1M form in the hotel.

When Diw left the hotel, she found that Maria and her group had disappeared. That was when she realised that she has been cheated.

Accompanied by her husband, she lodged a police report almost three hours later.

The police who quickly sprang into action managed to trace Maria’s identity through a CCTV recording at the shopping centre.
