IPOH: The man featured in a CCTV recording allegedly abusing his wife claimed trial at a magistrate’s court here.

Chik was charged under Section 323 of the Penal Code, which carries a jail term of up to a year or a fine of up to RM2,000 or both upon conviction.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Nurul Qistini Qamarul Abrar prosecuted while Chik was represented by lawyers Dexter Mah, Syaira Othman and Hasan Mohd Yusof.

Chik became the centre of attention after a CCTV footage, allegedly showing him hitting Fong, went viral on Facebook in August.

Both husband and wife lodged police reports on Sept 3 over the incident.

Two days later, the state Welfare Department obtained an interim restraining order by the Ipoh High Court to protect Fong from her husband for alleged domestic violence.

Fong, who is pregnant, held a press conference on Sept 5 where she showed reporters bruises and bite marks.

She said the alleged abuse was sparked by a row with her husband over business matters.

Chik has meanwhile revealed an additional hour-long footage of the incident to clear his name and told reporters his wife was violently hitting him while he was trying to get her to calm down.

He also said that he tried to console his wife and persuade her to go to the hospital after the initial struggle.

Magistrate Haslinda Raof set Oct 31 for mention.
