KOTA KINABALU: An early morning fire gutted the upper deck of a ferry, operating in Sabah and the international offshore financial centre of Labuan.

No casualty was reported following the 6am blaze, Labuan police chief Supt Adzhar Othman said.

The fire was believed to have started at the canteen counter area and quickly spread to the rest of the upper deck, he said.

The blaze broke out about an hour before passengers and vehicles were due to board and only several workers were believed to have been on board in making preparations for the 8am trip to Menumbok in Sabah.

The ferry can accommodate up to 550 passengers and 80 vehicles while making the one-hour crossing between the island and the Sabah mainland.

The vessel is operated by the Labuan Ferry Corporation (LFC) that also operates another called Warisan.

A third ferry called Kimanis operated by another company also plies the Labuan-Menumbok route daily.
