Pilot project to monitor Bukit Antarabangsa soil movement

PUTRAJAYA: A wireless sensor network (WSN) technology will be used to monitor changes in soil movements in Bukit Antarabangsa where there had been a number of landslides.

This will be carried out under a pilot project which employs computer-controlled applications to monitor the movements at the hillside township, said Information, Communications and Culture Ministry deputy secretary-general (communication) Che Azemi Haron.

Located in Ulu Klang, Selangor, the Bukit Antarabangsa enclave has seen several damaging landslides from 1993.

The first major occurrence saw the collapse of one of three blocks at the 12-storey Highland Towers, costing the lives of 48 residents.

No fatalities were recorded in the two landslides which occurred in 1999 and 2000 but at least four vehicles were damaged in another landslide in April 2008.

Later in December the same year, another landslide killed five people and damaged 14 bungalows in Taman Bukit Mewah and Taman Bukit Utama.

“The WSN technology is still relatively new to us and is being used at the pilot testing stage.

“Apart from monitoring hillslope movements, we will also be testing the WSN for increasing agriculture productivity and possibly creating a track-and-trace system for halal products,” National Centre of Excellence for Sensor Technology director Prof Dr Borhanuddin Mohd Ali said.

Che Azmi and Dr Borhanuddin were speaking at a press conference after the launch of the WSN national seminar here on Tuesday.
