Former Socco executive jailed one day, fined RM10,000 for corruption

SIBU: A former senior executive of the Social Security Organisation (Socso) was sentenced by the Special Corruption Court here to a day’s jail and fined RM10,000 or six months’ imprisonment for corruption.

Showpi Hashim, 48, who was attached to the Socso Sarikei office, pleaded guilty.

He was charged with corruptly obtaining RM1,000 gratification from Gon Anggun as inducement to expedite a Socso claim in relation to a deceased, Jolly Gon, made by Gon and his wife, Melentan Gani, about 1.20pm on Feb 25, last year. (Jolly was the couple’s son).

When the charge, framed under Section 17(a) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act (MACC) 2009, was read out to him, he pleaded guilty before Sessions Court judge Ahmad Azhari Abdul Hamid.

The court was told that Gon had, on Jan 13, last year approached Showpi at his office to make a Socso claim over Jolly’s death. Showpi offered to help to expedite the process but at a price which he did not state.

A week later, Gon again met Showpi who asked for RM500 to process Jolly’s funeral expenses claim. At the same time, Showpi asked for a 10% payment out of the total amount on the Socso Survivor’s Pension Claim made by Gon, and it was to be paid upon approval.

On Jan 28, Gon lodged a report with the MACC office here over the payment demand made by Showpi.

On Feb 23, a cheque for RM6,089.58 was paid into Gon’s account at the Bank Simpanan Nasional while another cheque for RM2,435.76 was paid into his wife Melentan’s account at the same bank.

The court was told that the next day, Showpi made a call to Gon to ask for his 10% payment. Gon then contacted the MACC office and on Feb 25, a trap was set by MACC officers whereby a telephone conversation between Showpi and Gon was recorded.

Showpi then asked Gon to meet him in his office-issued vehicle near the bank about 1.20pm.

Earlier in mitigation, counsel Louis Jarrau told the court that Showpi was married with two children, had worked for Socso since 1987 and had a clean record. MACC officer Othman Anyan prosecuted. - Bernama
