PEKAN: Housewife Hamidah Abdullah has been riding a motorcycle in her hometown in Kampung Permatang Pauh for nearly 20 years.

However, she only got her probation licence yesterday under the Bantuan Lesen 1Malaysia initiative.

“All these years, I was riding without a valid licence,” said Hamidah, 35.

“I consider myself lucky as I was never caught by any enforcement personnel before.

“Now, I can ride anywhere without fear,” she said after receiving the Class B2 licence from Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak in the Pekan Umno hall yesterday.

Hamidah was among 234 people who were given a probation licence under the initiative of a non-governmental organisation Sekretariat Hal Ehwal Bandar with the cooperation of Kelab Anak Wawasan Pekan Pahang and the Road Transport Department.

The pioneer programme was launched in Pekan in May with the aim, among others, to help those from a poor background to obtain a valid licence.

Najib also commended 50 undergraduates of Universiti Teknologi Mara, Puncak Alam branch, for conducting a two-week eye check-up under the Jom Check Mata 1Malaysia programme in Pekan.

Of about 1,000 people checked, 431 of them were given spectacles.
