Sabah assembly suspends DAP's Sri Tanjung rep

KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah State Assembly has suspended DAP's Sri Tanjung assemblyman Jimmy Wong Sze Phin for disobeying the order of Speaker Datuk Seri Salleh Tun Said Keruak to retract a derogatory word against the state government.

Salleh said Wong had ignored his order to withdraw the word corruption which was uttered in bad faith when discussing the state's Budget 2013.

Wong's reluctance to retract the word caused a commotion for 15 minutes prompting Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Yahya Hussin to move a motion calling for his suspension from the assembly.

"If its like that, I like to thank those who supported me," Wong said after the majority of the state assemblymen agreed with the motion to suspend him.

The assembly was also told that Sabah women have the opportunity to participate in programmes that empower them, particularly in holding high posts.

Community Development and Consumer Affairs Minister Datuk Azizah Mohd Dun said the ministry did not exclude women whether degree, diploma holders or those with lower academic qualification from its leadership programmes.

"For the record, the ministry via the Women's Affairs Department hold the 'Women of Substance' programmes regularly to train women officers at management and executive level," she added. - Bernama
