Student couple held for dumping baby
KANGAR: A pair of Form Five students from a religious school here allegedly threw their newborn baby girl into a river near Kampung Behor Rotan Pahit out of shame.
The 17-year-olds thought they could get away with the cruel act, but their deed was discovered after the young mother suffered complications from the delivery.
The girl was believed to have covered up her pregnancy by claiming that she had gained weight.
It is learnt that she was admitted to Hospital Tunku Fauziah on Wednesday afternoon after she gave birth at her family home.
Once the doctor noticed signs of her having given birth, the girl relented and told the truth.
The doctor then alerted the police who launched a search and rescue operation at 9pm the same day.
Perlis police chief SAC Zull Aznam Haron said police managed to find the body at 1.15am on Thursday.
Subsequently, they arrested the couple along with the girl's 20-year-old brother and 17-year-old cousin who were believed to be involved in the case.
“They are being investigated for murder,” said SAC Zull Aznam.
SAC Zull Aznam added that initial investigation revealed that the baby was thrown into the river at about 2.30pm on Wednesday.
“We believe the baby was still alive when she was dumped.”
