KANGAR: The two Form Five students from a religious school, who allegedly threw their newborn baby girl into a canal near Kampung Behor Rotan Pahit here, have been remanded for a week.

The pair, aged 17, were arrested after the young mother suffered complications from the delivery. Also remanded were the girl's parents, in their 40s, her 20-year-old brother and 17-year-old cousin.

It was reported that the girl and her boyfriend decided to throw their baby into the canal, some 3km away from their home, out of shame.

However, after the girl gave birth on Wednesday afternoon at about 2pm at her home, she suffered complications and was sent to Hospital Tunku Fauziah for treatment.

The doctor questioned her after finding signs that she had giving birth. She confessed after being questioned.

The doctor then alerted the police who launched a search at the canal at about 9.20pm the same day and found the body of the infant at 1.15am on Thursday.
