Suai Water Treatment expansion ahead of schedule


MIRI: The RM64mil expansion of the Suai Water Treatment Plant is progressing smoothly and expected to be completed by mid- December this year.

Sarawak Public Utilities Minister, Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hassan said the progress of the works was 62.11 percent compared to the scheduled 61.66 percent with a start date of Aug 8 2011 and completion target of Feb 7, 2013.

"Testing will take another one month after completion," he told reporters after a briefing on the project, here Saturday.

Awang Tengah, who is also Resource Planning and Environment Second Minister, said the new plant was expected to be fully operational after 2013, but was unable to disclose the exact timeframe as the major pipelines needed to be connected first.

"The new plant will benefit the folks at Ulu Niah and Ulu Sibuti and resolve the low water pressure and provide clean water supply," he said, adding that the new plant was capable of producing 30 million litres per day compared to the existing 16 million litres. - Bernama
