KUALA LUMPUR: The Syariah High Court heard that Sarawak business leader Datuk Seri Mahmud Abu Bekir Taib has 111 bank accounts – totalling more than RM700mil –under his name.
His former wife Shahnaz A. Majid, 48, testified that the accounts were in several banks overseas, including in the United States, Europe and the Carribean.
Mahmud, son of Sarawak Chief Minister Tan Sri Abdul Taib, kept the money in US and sterling currencies, she said yesterday in a trial of her application to get RM300mil in matrimonial property and RM100mil in mutaah (gifts) as divorce settlement.
Shahnaz, sister of popular singer Datuk Sheila Majid, is also claiming 50% of all assets owned by Mahmud, such as luxury cars, houses in various locations, land in Sarawak and shares.
Questioned by her counsel Dr Rafie Shafie, Shahnaz said Mahmud, 49, told her about the accounts when they were husband and wife.
“He (Mahmud) comes from a very rich family who has billions of ringgit worth of assets and he is able to pay my RM100mil mutaah claim.”
Among others, she said, Mahmud had put in US$23mil (RM70.61mil) in a bank in Switzerland; US$17mil (RM52.19mil) in HSBC Bank (Jersey); US$5.3mil (RM16.27mil) and US$9.5mil (RM29.16mil) in HSBC Bank (Hong Kong).
Shahnaz and Mahmud were married on Jan 9, 1992 and divorced on May 11 last year. They have a son, who was born in 1993.
Mahmud was represented by counsel Saadiah Din.
The hearing continues on Oct 24.
