Malaysian duo produced in court
PETALING JAYA: Two Malaysians Muhamad Razin Sharhan Mustafa Kamal, 21, and Razif Mohd Ariff, 30 have been produced before a Lebanese Military Tribunal in Beirut on charges of alleged links to the al-Qaeda terror network.
Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Anifah Aman confirmed that the two were brought to face a military judge at 10am Lebanese time (4pm Malaysian time) yesterday.
Officials in Beirut said that Razin and Razif appeared calm when met outside the court.
Anifah said that Razif's father, a retired lieutenant-colonel of the Malaysian armed forces, was in Beirut.
He added that the father, Mohd Ariff Abdullah, together with Malaysian ambassador to Lebanon Illango Karuppannan, had met the military court-appointed lawyer for the two.
“Our embassy will provide all assistance to the two Malaysians,” said Anifah, who added that he had met Razif's father before he left Kuala Lumpur.
Razin and Razif were first produced before a military court on Thursday, following their arrest at a hotel in Beirut earlier in the week.
They are being charged in a military court instead of a civil court due to the nature of the accusation against them that is, involving terrorist activities.
According to reports, Razif and Razin had travelled to Turkey and entered Lebanon to meet an al-Qaeda operative after failing to get into war-torn Syria to join rebel forces against President Bashar Assad.
However, Lebanese intelligence, which has been monitoring the two since their arrival at Beirut's Rafik Hariri International airport, arrested them at the hotel.
Razif was once arrested in Yemen in 2010 and deported to Malaysia, where he is believed to have recruited Razin for a jihad mission.
