Cop claims trial to rape and robbery of Indonesian woman

KUALA LUMPUR: A policeman was charged in a Sessions Court here Thursday with raping and robbing an Indonesian woman at a hotel here last month.

Muhammad Haris Hassan, 36, who was attached to the Jinjang police station, claimed trial to raping the 27-year-old Indonesian woman at a hotel in Jalan Seri Utara 1, Batu 6 1/2, off Jalan Ipoh here, about 7.35am on Sept 23.

Muhammad Haris was charged under Section 376 of the Penal Code which carried a maximum jail of 20 years and also whipping, on conviction.

He also faces second charge of robbing the woman's two gold rings, a handphone and RM40 cash at the same time and place.

For this charge, he faces a maximum of 14 years' jail and a fine or whipping under Section 392 of the Penal Code on conviction.

Sessions judge Emelia Kaswati Mohamad Khalid granted bail at RM10,000 and ordered Muhammad Haris to surrender his passport and report to the nearest police station every Friday pending mention on Nov 7.

Deputy public prosecutor Ooi Chean Ling prosecuted while Muhammad Haris was unrepresented. He paid the bail.
