Move to set up nurseries for the disabled to begin in Dec

GEORGE TOWN: Work to set up nurseries for disabled children will begin by the end of the year, said Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development secretary-general Datuk Dr Noorul Ainur Mohd Nur, here on Saturday.

"A meeting with parents, disabled associations and relevant parties will be held next week to discuss the matter and it's expected to be implemented in December," she said.

She said that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak's proposal to set up nurseries for the disabled in the 2013 Budget tabled recently was the best way to help parents of such children.

She advised parents with disabled children not to keep them hidden from society, as not registering them under the category deprived these children of their due rights.

So far, only 405,441 disabled individuals were registered with the Social Welfare Department nationwide and the figures were still low as it was believed there were many more unregistered, she added. - Bernama
