Zahid: Malaysia to become training centre for Red Cross' international committee

By MARTIN CARVALHO

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia is set to become the training centre for the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) said Defence Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

He said the offer was extended to the international body to conduct its humanitarian training courses at the country's Peacekeeping Training Centre in Port Dickson.

He said this was in line with the country's experience in peace keeping mission that also involves winning over the 'hearts and minds' of locals in affected conflict zones, he said this after officiating a Senior Workshop on International Rules Governing Military Operations jointly organised by the ministry and ICRC Monday.

Some 70 senior military officers from 70 nations are participating in the week-long event on the implementation of international legal framework in modern military operations.

Also present at the event was ICRC's vice- president Christine Beerli.
